Goodbye Narwhal, hello Oncelot!
After 3+ months uptime on Natty Narwhal, I took the dive and updated to Oneiric Oncelot.
Why? I'm not really sure, I just like to stay ahead of the curve. Surely the new major Linux kernel update has some goodies in it I'll use eventually!

Yet another install
After I had wiped the old server clean, I thought to myself, "Self, you have a much better machine running Server 2003 sitting in your office that hasn't been on in months!"
That is when the problems started...
- The Serial ATA RAID controller on my ancient P4Pe motherboard wasn't playing nice with Ubuntu 11. I had to buy another SATA RAID controller...
- ...but that RAID controller wasn't playing nice with Ubuntu either. The installer just plain couldn't see the hard disks attached.
- I went into a secondary console and saw that lspci showed the RAID controller, and that fdisk -l had all the drives listed plain as day... but the install still couldn't see them.
- As a hail mary pass, I went into a tertiary console and just ran diskpart manually. Somehow, it found the drives. I reformatted them there, rebooted, and bam, the installer found it.
Quite the long and arduous process, but a rewarding one when it is all said and done. A 1GHz P3 + 512MB RAM + 1x 5200RPM IDE HDD has been replaced with a 2.4GHz P4 + 1GB RAM + 1x 10000RPM 37.4GB SATA + 1x 7200RPM 250GB SATA.
For those that didn't understand any of that, it is mo' betta' now.
